RESUME
La variété des langues à laquelle les mouvements ouvriers sont confrontés est d’abord restreinte aux idiomes européens, qui peuvent partager une armature théorique commune et faciliter les transferts. Mais comment traduire des concepts dans des langues extra-européennes ? La diversité des traductions en chinois des termes « anarchie » et « anarchisme » témoigne de la logique complexe des emprunts linguistiques et aussi de la dimension créatrice du processus de traduction. L’introduction de cette terminologie, amorcée dès la fin du XIXe siècle, accompagne un rayonnement important de l’anarchisme dans la Chine post-impériale des années 1910-1920. Quant à la large diffusion au sein de la société chinoise de la notion d’« entraide », empruntée à Kropotkine, elle atteste la postérité de concepts promus par l’anarchisme au-delà des seuls cercles partisans.

“The reality behind anarchy’s name.” Translating “anarchism” and “mutual aid” into Chinese (1906-1927)
The variety of languages working class movements were confronted with was initially restricted to European idioms, which had a shared theoretical framework facilitating exchanges. But how to translate these concepts into non-European languages ? The diversity of Chinese translations for the terms “anarchy” and “anarchism” testifies to the complexity of linguistic borrowing as well as to the creative dimension of translation processes. This new terminology was gradually introduced from the end of the 19th century and ushered in the influence of anarchism in post-imperial China between 1910 and 1920. The subsequent spread of the notion of “mutual aid” to Chinese society – borrowed from Peter Kropotkin – attests to the longevity of concepts promoted by anarchism outside of partisan circles.
