Résumé

Cet article défend l’idée que, dans la pensée sociale de Sorel, la production artistique, de même que la catégorie de l’esthétique dans sa philosophie, revêtent beaucoup plus d’importance qu’on ne l’a pensé jusqu’à présent. Giambattista Vico est le principal auteur sur lequel s’appuie Sorel pour introduire l’esthétique dans l’analyse de la réalité sociale. L’intérêt pour Vico, que Sorel partageait avec Benedetto Croce, nous montre que le cadre de référence déterminant de la célèbre exposition du mythe dans les Réflexions sur la violence n’est autre que l’esthétique crocienne de l’expression. Le mythe, comme on peut le voir dans les Réflexions, transpose à l’institution la définition esthétique de l’esprit par Croce. En reprenant à son compte l’esthétique de Croce comme clef pour l’intelligence de l’activité créatrice comme telle, Sorel détache sa propre théorie sociale de son fondement matérialiste, permettant ainsi de mettre d’autant plus facilement le mythe au service de la rénovation nationale.

Abstract

Institutions and aesthetics : Sorel, Vico, and Croce.

This paper argues that artistic production bears much more weight in Georges Sorel’s social thought, as the category of the aesthetic does in his philosophy, than has previously been understood. Giambattista Vico is the central figure on whom Sorel draws to bring aesthetics into analysis of social reality. The interest in Vico that Sorel shared with Benedetto Croce allows us to see that the decisive referential frame for the famous presentation of myth in Reflections on violence is Croce’s aesthetics of expression. Myth, as it appears in Reflections, transposes Croce’s aesthetic definition of spirit onto the institution. In adopting Croce’s aesthetic as a way of understanding creative activity as such, Sorel cut his own social theory from its materialist basis, making it all the easier to draft myth into the service of national renewal.
