Le sociologue britannique Richard Hoggart (1918-2014) fait aujourd’hui figure d’autorité. Les appropriations de son œuvre en France permettent d’aborder les formes de la culture ouvrière, mais aussi les perceptions et les usages de cette notion par les intellectuels. Si son œuvre rappelle en effet l’historicité de la notion de culture ouvrière, les discours et les analyses qui l’entourent la reflètent aussi à leur manière. Initiée dans les années 1950, diffusée dans les années 1960-1980, commentée ensuite, cette œuvre s’inscrit, de fait, au cœur d’interrogations très politiques sur la pérennité ou la transformation, la centralité ou au contraire la marginalisation de la culture et de l’identité des classes ouvrières, dans le double contexte de triomphe de la culture de masse et de désindustrialisation.

An endless quest : Working-class culture and politics in the light of Richard Hoggart

British sociologist Richard Hoggart (1918-2014) is today an authority in social sciences. The uses of his work in France allow for an examination of the forms taken by working-class culture, but also of the perceptions and uses of this notion by the intellectuals. Indeed, if his work highlights the historicity of the concept of working-class culture, the discourses and analyzes that surround it also reflect it in their own way. Initiated in the 1950s, disseminated in the 1960-1980s, commented on later, his work is, in fact, at the heart of very political questions about the durability or transformation, the centrality or, on the contrary, the marginalization of the culture and the identity of the working-classes, in the dual context of the triumph of mass culture and deindustrialization.
