RÉSUMÉ
Quelle part, parmi la publication des livres et des brochures, occupent les œuvres complètes au sein des maisons d’éditions du PCF ? Cet article, qui s’appuie sur les recherches existantes et sur des archives inédites, retrace les logiques commerciales, stratégiques et politiques qui expliquent pourquoi ces projets n’ont jamais complètement abouti. Il reconstruit les vicissitudes et les empêchements éditoriaux qu’ont connus les Œuvres complètes de Marx, Lénine ou encore Staline et Thorez lors de trois moments historiques et politiques : la bolchevisation ; la guerre froide ; l’aggiornamento et les années 1968. Au-delà des contraintes liées à l’appartenance au mouvement communiste international, ces publications apparaissent comme constitutives de l’identité communiste, mais ont toujours été soumises aux impératifs de la politique immédiate.

Sisyphus’ rock : Publishing complete works in communist publishing houses.
What is the share of complete works among all the books and pamphlets published by the French Communist Party’s publishing houses ? This article uses existing research and unpublished archives to trace the business, strategic and political decisions that explain why some projects were never completely brought to fruition. It retraces the vicissitudes and publishing bans that Marx’, Lenin’s, Stalin’s or Thorez’ Complete Works faced at three watershed moments : bolshevization, the Cold War, the aggiornamento and the late 1960s. Beyond the constraints that derive from being part of an international communist movement, these publications appear as constitutive of a Communist identity, but were always subjected to the necessities of immediate politics.
