Cet article remet en question l’interprétation courante de la Première Guerre mondiale comme un événement limité simplement à la période s’étendant de 1914 à 1918. Cette conception occulte plusieurs aspects du conflit et nuit à sa compréhension, surtout si on prend en considération le rôle de l’empire colonial français dans l’effort de guerre. Concernant la politique et la pensée coloniales des races, de la citoyenneté et de la vie militaire, la période 1906-1916 apparaît cruciale pour intégrer l’histoire de la « ?Plus Grande France ? » à l’histoire de la Grande Guerre.
Abstract
The Greater War : Colonies, race, and the French army (1906-1916).
This article argues that the conventional view of the First World War as an historical event taking place only between 1914 and 1918 obscures important aspects of the conflict, particularly when one considers the place of the French colonial empire in the war effort. From the perspective of colonial politics and ideas about race, citizenship, and soldiering, the period between 1906 and 1916 is crucial for understanding “Greater France” in the Great War.
