Résumé
Des travaux insistant sur le caractère colonial de l’entreprise sioniste ont suscité un vif débat qui, indirectement, porte sur la définition du colonialisme. Beaucoup de chercheurs ne voient dans le conflit israélo-arabe qu’un affrontement national, ethnique, voire religieux, et récusent son lien avec la colonisation de la terre. Cette démarche est favorisée, chez les historiens israéliens, par la charge idéologique du vocabulaire utilisé pour construire leur discours. Or, ce vocabulaire est le produit du projet politique ambitieux de transformer l’hébreu en une langue parlée moderne. Ainsi, les émigrants-colons arrivés en Palestine avec la deuxième vague d’émigration sioniste connue sous le nom Aliya Shniya (1904-1914) ne furent pas seulement les fondateurs d’une nouvelle société, ils forgèrent aussi les concepts qui les empêchèrent de prendre conscience de la dimension coloniale de leur acte.
Abstract
The vocabulary of Zionism : A return to the sources.
Scholarship emphasizing the colonial character of the Zionist enterprise have elicited a lively debate that indirectly opens the question of how to define colonialism. Many scholars only see in the Israeli-Arab conflict a national, ethnic, and religious clash, setting aside its link to the colonization of land. This tendency is furthered, among Israeli historians, by the ideological weight of the vocabulary used to construct their discourse. This vocabulary is the product of an ambitious project to transform Hebrew into a modern spoken language. Immigrant-colonists arriving in Palestine with the second wave of Zionist immigration known under the name of Aliya Shniya (1904-1914) were not only the founders of a new society, but the forgers of concepts that prevented them from becoming aware of the colonial dimension of their actions.
